High-Level Panel on 2030 Global Water Architecture

Convenor(s):
Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, Switzerland; Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Development, France; Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Hungary; Ministry of Foreign Affairs, The Netherlands;

There is currently a mismatch between the integrated and ambitious 2030 vision of freshwater and sanitation management, formulated in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and the international political structures in place to support its implementation. According to the final report of the UN Secretary-General’s Advisory Board on Water and Sanitation (UNSGAB) a more effective global water architecture is necessary in order to realize the 2030 water agenda: A UN Intergovernmental Committee on Water and Sanitation needs to be established for countries to be able to discuss all water and sanitation challenges regularly, to follow-up and review progress towards water-related SDG targets and to guide UN actions.

The high-level panel will discuss the question of the 2030 global water architecture on the basis of political deliberations of a core group of countries, which are inspired by the pertinent recommendations of the UNSGAB final report. The event aims at sharing the current thinking of this group with representatives of other governments and the water community at large, getting their feedback and building up further support. The high-level panel contributes to drawing political, i.e. government, attention to water and sanitation as key drivers of economic and social development.
