#SIWISofa: Applying a multinational’s core competencies to the sanitation crisis

American Standard, the iconic 140-year old plumbing products manufacturer, put its engineering and design resources to work creating affordable, aspirational, and attainable solutions to the global sanitation crisis that plagues 40 percent of the world’s population. They incorporated local customs into the product design of its inventive SaTo toilet pan that ingeniously closes off pit latrines from the open air and flying insects. Instituting a sustainable business model in product manufacturing and distribution, they have succeeded in distributing one million SaTo pans worldwide, improving the lives of more than 5 million developing world residents.
