The Regional Initiative for the Assessment of the Impact of Climate Change on Water Resources and Socio-Economic Vulnerability in the Arab Region (RICCAR) is a collaborative inter-governmental, inter-agency initiative aimed at building a regional knowledge base and institutional capacity for climate change assessment and adaptation.
In doing so, RICCAR applies regional climate modeling, hydrological modeling, socio-economic vulnerability assessment and mapping tools to generate a science-based integrated assessment for informing climate change policy-making in the region.
The side event will discuss the methodology and findings to date of the integrated assessment. This includes the set-up of the MENA/Arab Domain, the collection and rescue of climate and hydrological data, and the findings of regional climate modeling projections being incorporated into hydrological models covering the Arab region.
Also presented will be the collaborate framework adopted to prepare the socio-economic vulnerability assessment, mapping tool and regional knowledge hub at the expert level, as well as the high-level support for RICCAR mandated by the Arab Ministerial Water Council, the Council of Arab Ministers Responsible for the Environment through the Arab Permanent Committee on Meteorology, the United Nations Regional Coordination Mechanism Thematic Working Group on Climate Change, as well as associated Arab strategies and action plans.
