Thursday 27 August | 13.00-13.30 | Room: Exhibition Hall
FreshWater Watchers collect a sample in London

Urbanisation and climate change have led to major impacts on freshwater ecosystems and the services that they provide to present and future generations. Managing environmental change in these vital ecosystems is limited by the lack of information of ecosystem dynamics and by a disconnect between regional decision makers and local users. There is a clear need for new approaches, which involve citizens and communities in ecosystem stewardship. Through the active participation in the management and monitoring of freshwater ecosystems, integrated solutions can be developed to meet the needs of local populations as well as long term ecological balances.
