Come and visit a platform for research, development and exchange of knowledge and technology in water purification. The facility is national and internationally used by academia, research organisations, companies and WWTPs. Current activities include pilot tests for the implementation of the world largest membrane bioreactor at Stockholm’s main wastewater treatment plant.


Preparation trials for the Wolds largest MembranBioReaktor for advanced sewage treatment

Pilot-tests with flat-sheet and hollow-fibre membrane technology for upgrading existing urban conventional activated sludge processed to MembraneBioReactors (MBR) in order to significantly increase treatment capacity, robustness, efficiency and enhanced effluent quality. In collaboration with Stockholm water company for their reconstruction of the Stockholm Henriksdal WWTP.

Reuse of treated wastewater for non-potable use

Combining conventional and emerging secondary and tertiary treatment techniques in various combinations, optimized from an overall sustainability perspective, the ReUse-project established a number of treatment systems for different regions in the world targeting various effluent qualities for agriculture reuse, industrial reuse or groundwater recharge. Reuse of wastewater for various reuse purposes without increasing the total environmental impact and without increase in costs. In collaboration with Xylem Inc.

Complementary systems for the purification of pharmaceutical residues and other priority persistent substances

Tests and further development of the most effective treatment options, including oxidation, biological filters, membranes, activated carbon, enzymes, their combinations, etc. Technologies are evaluated regarding overall environmental impact and cost, but also their potential to adapt to new developments in the future.


Demonstration of innovative solutions for Reuse of water, Recovery of valuables and Resource efficiency in urban wastewater treatment. An European project.

Innovative anaerobe system for sewage treatment

Complete treatment system consisting of UpflowAnaerobicSludgeBlanket (UASB) reactor, mainstream anammox and prosperous removal for maximum resource efficiency. Includes some of the world’s most innovative pilot-tests with long-term (>2 yrs) operation of UASB and deammonifikation in the mainstream for normal sewage water (combined sewer system).

Increased biogas production

Development of different systems and configuration to enhance the production of biogas at existing WWTPs with minimum investment needs. Further, GHG-emissions reduction from sludge treatment is a focus areas at the R&D-facility.
