MENA Focus: World Café 2016 / Water, Growth, Stability

Join us for a lively discussion in a pleasant atmosphere, closely echoing and following up on the MENA Focus Day opening session themes. Namely, how MENA countries can contribute to the implementation of the water related SDGs and the new climate agreement, while addressing horizontally the cross cutting issues including migration, gender, youth and human rights, and water related security issues. Participate in our event which will use modified World Café Method and become also a part of growing expert network on RECs Sida funded project WATER SUM (www.watersum.rec.org).

The event will kick-off with a brief plenary session, followed by 3 working groups. on the following topics: Governing water for sustainable growth (group 1), Water related mitigation and adaptation measures to climate change for sustainable growth (group 2) and Water security action planning for sustainable growth (group 3) issues in the MENA region. Working groups will receive background document (distributed in advance) and will be rotating on in intervals of 25-20-15 minutes while facilitators will stay at the respective area during the entire process and later support outcome's summary. Use unique opportunity and meet leaders representing central and local governments, regional bodies, NGOs, academia and businesses from the region.

Facilitators in three groups / groups will be rotating in intervals of 25-20-15 minutes

Group 1 - Governing water for sustainable growth
Facilitator:Ventzislav Vassilev, Water Management and Biology Expert, REC

Objective: Define needs for good water governance in the MENA region
Outcomes: (1) List of challenges for good water governance at all levels, (2) Recommendations for further strengthening water governance and improvement integrated water management in the MENA region, (3) List of ideas how MENA countries can contribute to meet water related SDGs.

Group 2 - Water related mitigation and adaptation measures to climate change for sustainable growth
Facilitator: Fayez Abdulla, Jordan University of Science & Technology

Objective: To discuss water related mitigation and adaptation measures to climate change in the MENA region

Outcomes: (1) Suggestions for improvement and sharing knowledge and information on water-related mitigation and adaptation measures in the MENA region. (2) Identified gaps at national and regional level, thus contributing to achieving the goals of the new climate agreement. (3) Advice for financing possibilities for water-related mitigation and adaptation measures

Group 3 - Water security action planning for sustainable growth:
Facilitator: Chad Staddon, University of the West of England, Bristol

Objective: Discuss local water security action planning for sustainable growth

Outcomes: (1) Tips on how to address local water security action planning. (2) Advice on how to promote local environmental governance. (3) Suggestions for actions that local communities can implement in order to improve water security.
