NDC Explorer: Water in 163 Climate Plans and Selected Cases

Thursday 31 August | 14.00-14.45 | Room: NL 253
This session explores the role of water in countries’ climate action plans under the Paris Climate Agreement, the so called (intended) Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), and their potential contributions to simultaneously achieving SDG 6 on water and SDG 13 on climate of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. To this end it presents the NDC Explorer, an online tool for NDC analysis, developed by DIE, ACTS, SEI and the UNFCCC secretariat. Analyzing the role of water in the 163 NDCs submitted worldwide, we scrutinize how water management options are expected to contribute to SDG 13 and the Paris agreement and how the Paris agreement may underpin the achievement of SDG 6. The session then presents two more in-depth cases in developing countries. A study on Morocco presents the role of water for climate adaptation and mitigation in Morocco's NDC. A second case study analyses the role of water in Kenya’s NDC.
